ABOUT ME AND HOW OLD SCHOOL GYM CAME TO BE

My name is Angel, I am 22 years old, and I live in Mablethorpe. I have been training for just over 2 years now. I have always been a hard worker, had a part time job since I was 14 and have saved for the future ever since. I started training with a friend in a local leisure gym as a complete newbie, fumbling my way along but consistently turning up. This is a screenshot of a video I took before I started.

After the first 6 months I gained more confidence in how to train and decided that a leisure center was not the best fit for my training style. I moved to a Gym in Louth, as they accommodate much more for weight lifting and include 24 hour access which meant I could go whenever suited me. I love it there, this is where I first got to properly experience the gym community and I made so much progress.

As I decided the fitness industry was definitely something I wanted to be more involved in, I changed careers as a sport coach and qualified lifeguard. I also completed my online course to become a personal trainer. I then changed to a gym in Skegness, which was close to my job.

I have loved every second of my journey, and have become pretty well-known in Mablethorpe for being a committed gym goer. I had so many come up to me and ask me where I trained, and it always came as a disappointment because I would drive 40 minutes each way and many have limited access to transport. This was when I started looking into what it would take for me to open my own 24 hour gym locally and if it would be possible.

I started looking for potential locations, and wanted to rent the Old School building on the high street (hence the name, Old School Gym!). I based my business plan around this however, the building needed too much work for me to be able to start the business there. Later on a unit became available (my unit) but I hadn’t had a response for months apart from the agent letting me know there was a lot of other people interested. I proceeded to apply for a business loan as none of this could move forward without this along with my lifelong savings (no, I am not born from wealth!). Then in December I heard back that the loan had been approved. Only a couple of days afterwards, the agent got back to me saying they would love for me to rent the unit. Everything fell into place!

It was all hands on deck from there. I cannot thank my family enough for their support and belief in me, without them I wouldn’t have had the confidence to go for it. Both my parents made every effort to help get the unit decorated and ready for opening in April. I am excited to finally put my personal training qualification to use! Most of all, I can’t wait to bring together the gym community in Mablethorpe.

Everything happens for a reason! – Angel Xx
